The Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) is touted to have a fleet of 6,000 buses soon.

Amidst the coronavirus outbreak, the BEST has slowly and gradually increased the number of buses in order to help people in the city commute.

The BEST General Manager Surendra Bagade speaking at a webinar stated that the target has been set to deploy 6,000 buses in phase one and 10,000 buses in phase two. That basically translates to 50 buses per lakh population. Bagade further opined that the deployment will come easy due to private participation.

Earlier, the BEST had been operating its full fleet of 3,500 buses which includes 120 double-deckers. The BEST undertaking has 27 bus depots, 51 bus stations and 112 bus terminals. With the Maharashtra government launching the 'Mission Begin Again' initiative on June 8, BEST started 2,132 buses on 82 routes in the city of Mumbai for people travelling to their workplaces.

Meanwhile, ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi, the Maharashtra government has allowed the resumption of inter-district bus services from today. The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) had earlier suspended its operation due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown in March this year.

Moreover, a note from the MSRTC asserted that the travellers will not require e-passes. Also, online reservation for all class of buses is open. However, the buses are said to operate at a lesser frequency and follow the Standard Operating Procedures with regards to the coronavirus.
