The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) is set to procure 500 midi buses to improve last-mile connectivity across the city, particularly linking metro and railway stations with nearby residential areas.

The proposed buses, expected to be around 9 metres long and powered by CNG, are designed to operate efficiently on narrow roads and in congested localities where standard buses face difficulties. They will also serve hilly regions such as Vikhroli, Bhandup and Powai, where demand for smaller buses remains high.

According to internal assessments, approximately 315 buses are required to cater specifically to metro and railway station connectivity. However, considering the rapid expansion of the city’s metro network and increasing commuter demand, BEST has decided to scale up the plan to 500 buses.

The move comes amid ongoing discussions within the undertaking over whether to purchase the buses outright or acquire them on a lease basis. Several committee members have reportedly favoured ownership, citing better control over maintenance and long-term reliability.

The initiative is expected to strengthen feeder services and make daily commuting more seamless for Mumbaikars, addressing persistent gaps in last-mile transport.
