The committee which was formed to investigate the root cause of the fire on the monorail submitted its interim report to MMRDA. According to the report of the committee, the fire broke out because of overheating of the wheel/tire.
On November 9, the Monorail left for Chembur at 5:00 am from the Wadala depot. Upon reaching platform number one of Mysore colony station, the driver saw smoke coming out from the rear end. The fire brigade reached the spot and got the situation under control but due to this fire, two compartments were badly affected.
This fire raised questions over the security of the passengers. In view of this, Metropolitan Commissioner, UPS Madan ordered an inquiry into the MMRDA and it was decided to keep the monorail service shut until the investigation was completed. Monorail has been out of service since then. It is being reported that it may take about a week to complete the investigation after which the service is expected to resume.
According to the report, the Monorail was run overnight and after the second round of the 'trial run', the wheel of the train overheated and it emitted smoke. Although efforts were made to control the smoke, due to the inefficiency of equipment, the smoke turned into fire.
Technical inefficiency and glitches proved to have been the reason for the fire but it remains to be seen how MMRDA deal with the entire situation ahead of the final report.
