In a major step towards improving passenger comfort, Mumbai's local trains will soon be fitted with an oxygen enhancement system. This will reduce breathing problems and suffocation due to overcrowding.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav announced the initiative through a video link on Monday. He said that work is already underway to design a new rake with this advanced feature.
Approximately 75 to 80 lakh commuters rely on the Central and Western Railway lines on Mumbai's suburban rail network every day. Due to overcrowding, thousands of passengers risk their lives to travel by train. Sometimes they also hang on the train doors due to the rush. This overcrowding reduces the oxygen level in the local coaches, causing health problems.
"The new local trains are being designed inspired by the Vande Bharat Express. These upgraded trains will have an oxygen enhancement system, which will keep the local coaches fresh. Similar to the system installed in Vande Bharat trains, this system will help maintain the oxygen level in the coaches," said Vaishnav.
"Also, several railway stations in Mumbai are being renovated to handle the growing passenger load. Efforts are also being made to increase the number of local train services. Currently, 3,032 local trains run on the Central and Western Railway lines and this number is expected to increase by 10% in the near future," added Vaishnav.
