Mumbai’s mandatory seat-belt rule for all passengers in a four-wheeler, which was slated to come into effect from today, November 1, has been postponed for 10 days.

Confirming the same, the Mumbai Police earlier in the day announced that the implementation of wearing rear seat belts in vehicles will begin from November 10.

It is pertinent to note that this development came after the Mumbai Traffic police received several queries regarding the drive as not all commuters were aware of the notification issued 15 days ago.

Officials further stated that these ten days will be dedicated to spread awareness about installing seatbelts for all seats in a vehicle and ensure that after November 10, all passengers would buckle up while travelling.

These ten days, the drivers will be warned and the city police will use Twitter and radio to spread awareness about the rule.

The fine which was going to be slapped on the owner of the vehicle through e-challan was ₹200 for violating the rule.

In addition to commuters and motorists, the Traffic police also issued notification for police officers to wear seatbelts and instructed all the pillion riders on two-wheelers to wear helmets.

The notification also specified that the driver or rider would be penalised if they are caught without seatbelt or helmet.

All the police and traffic officials too have been instructed to ensure that they are wearing seatbelts and helmets have been made compulsory for all pillion riders as per the Motor Vehicles Act (MVA), senior cop concluded.
