Relief for Thane district as Bavri dam overflows

The heavy rainfall in the month of August has led to overflowing of Bavri dam and relieving the residents in Thane with worries of water supply.

The Barvi dam, which supplies water to Thane district, started overflowing on Sunday. The water level reached its full capacity due to the constant rainfall in the region and the gates of the dam were opened to release excess water. Last year, the Barvi dam started overflowing on August 4. 

In Thane district, Kalyan-Dombivli, Thane city, Mira-Bhayandar, Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, Badlapur get their water supply from the Barvi dam. The overflowing of the dam has alleviated water concerns in these cities. 

The height of Bavri dam is 72.6 meters and the level of water storage in the dam is up to 72.51 meters. As per the officials, the dam has started overflowing and several gates have been opened to release the water. Of the 11 gates, the water is being released through four gates: 1, 7, 9 and 10. 

The heavy rainfall in the month of August has led to overflowing of Bavri dam and relieving the residents in Thane with worries of water supply. As of Sunday morning, the dam had 97 per cent water storage and it overflowed after the rainfall started again. Nearly 340.78 million cubic meters of water is stored in the Bavri dam. 

Of this, 106 million cubic metres of surplus water stored in the dam has been allotted. 88 million cubic metres of water has bee allotted to Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) followed by 23 to Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC), eight to STEM water distribution and Infrastructure company and 13 to Jeevan Pradhikaran. 

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Irrigation Department has decided to increase the height of the dam to 340 million cubic metres. However, the rehabilitation process of people near the dam is ongoing.
