BEST to repair 52 street light poles affected due to Cyclone Tauktae

Information shared by the officials revealed that a cost of INR 45 lakh will be spent for the repair work. Some poles are said to be 'beyong repair' and the department has decided to replace them immediately.

The city of Mumbai and many other districts in Maharashtra were affected by Cyclone Tauktae which hit the coastal regions recently. As per the data revealed by the BEST officials, the cyclone had caused damages worth INR 45 lakh damage to the street lights in Mumbai.

Sharing more information with the Times of India, Manoj Varade, a spokesperson from BEST said that strong winds and heavy rainfall resulted in the damage over the last few days. The team has now planned to repair 52 poles for the street lights in Mumbai and this would incur a cost of INR 45 lakh for the repair work. Of the damaged poles, many are said to be beyond repair and hence the department has decided to replace them.

Data revealed by the BEST stated that the city has approximately 40,000 street lights and most of these poles were damaged along the coastline. During and post the cyclone, Mumbaikars shared the information via social media which helped the officials in identifying the fallen or damaged polls, and emergency teams were sent immediately to tackle the situation.

Cyclone Tauktae hit the city over the weekend on May 15 and 16, 2021, and keeping the warning issued by IMD in mind, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation had informed the rescue teams in Mumbai to stay alert and tackle the crisis efficiently. Information released by the civic body post the cyclone suggested that due to the strong winds, a total of 812 trees fell in Mumbai, of which 504 trees were in the private areas and 308 trees were in the public areas. Most of these trees were of foreign origin.

Besides Mumbai, the cyclone also affected other coastal regions of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, recently visited the affected areas, following which the state government decided to announce a package for the cyclone-affected coastal districts. Announcements were expected to be made after a thorough check was conducted by the government bodies.
