Housing societies in Mumbai that do not have firefighting equipment in place or do not carry out fire safety audit, will have to face the Mumbai Fire Brigade Department. Henceforth, the MFB department will not entertain societies nor the builders if they fail to place firefighting equipment in buildings or fail to carry out a fire safety audit.

Mumbai Fire Brigade department has formed a special team of 67 officers who will verify if societies have placed firefighting mechanisms or not. If the society and the builder are found guilty, then the department will have all the rights to take action against the same. If the society or the builder fails to work on it, then the department will hold right to discontinue water and electricity supply, informed Fire Chief Officer Prabhat Rahangdale.

Rahangdale added that there many societies that do not check if their firefighting equipment is functional or not. Along with this, every six months, societies that are supposed to carry out fire safety audit but they fail to do the same, said Rahangdale.

On August 22, a fire broke out on the 12th floor of Crystal Tower in Parel that claimed four lives and 18 people were injured. The incident took place around 7:45 am and when the fire broke out on the 12th floor, in less than half-an-hour the fire intensified.

While investigating, the police registered a case against builder Abdul Razzak Supariwala and arrested him. Police have registered a case under section 304, 336, 337, 338 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Along with this, the builder has been booked under Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Act
