In connection with Bhima-Koregaon violence, the Pune police arrested five activists, including Dalit activist Sudhir Dhawale who was arrested in Mumbai. Apart from this, the police picked up Rona Wilson, an activist and Jawaharlal Nehru University alumnus, from Delhi, activists Shoma Sen, Mahesh Raut and lawyer Surendra Gadling from Nagpur.

These said activists are said to be suspected members of the banned Communist Party of India (CPI-Maoist) and were responsible for the Elgaar Parishad which took place in Pune on December 31, 2017. As per the police officials, the Elgaar Parishad led to the violence on January 1, 2018, when people were commemorating Mahar regiment on the 200th anniversary of the Bhima-Koregaon battle.

Who are Surendra and Rona?

Nagpur resident Surendra Gadling is a lawyer who backs naxalities by taking up their cases. Since then he has been on the police radar. Likewise, Rona Wilson is known as a fierce supporter of naxalites. He plays an important role in organising events and rallies in support of naxalites.

Between December 31 and January 1, thousands of Dalit had gathered in Bhima-Koregaon to pay respect to the Mahar regiment on the 200th anniversary of the battle of Bhima-Koregaon. During the event, incidences of arson and stone pelting were reported. One person died as well and several got injured. This incident led to the Maharashtra bandh which took place on January 3, 2018.

Furious Dalit activists then filed FIRs against Hindutva activists Sambhaji Bhide and Milind Ekbote for triggering violence. Ekbote was arrested but was later released on bail.
