India's first International Sports University was recently inaugurated in Maharashtra, on Tuesday, July 27, 2021. Information regarding the same was shared by Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Sunil Kedar, who mentioned that the admission process for the university courses is being planned. The courses would begin from October 2022. Meanwhile, officials from the government are working towards setting up a recruitment process and the creating the infrastructure for the same. Instructions for these steps were given by NCP President Sharad Pawar who attended the launch event along with senior leaders at the Sahyadri Guest House. 

Besides the NCP chief, Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Sunil Kedar, Tourism Minister Aaditya Thackeray, MP Sanjay Raut, MLA Rohit Pawar, Additional Chief Secretary of School Education and Sports Vandana Krishna, Sports and Youth Welfare Commissioner Om Prakash Bakoria, Architect Shashi Prabhu, Chief Director of Symbiosis Dr. Vidya Yerawadekar were also present at the event.

Sharad Pawar further added that in order to start the International Sports University, officials must work towards filling important posts like the Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Professors, etc., and the administrative process for the same should be completed immediately. Meanwhile, necessary steps should be taken to provide basic facilities.

With this launch, Maharashtra becomes the first state in the country to set up a university of this stature and this will prove to be an important step in the field of sports, said Minister Kedar, who also mentioned that the university will aim to produce good coaches and good players from across the state.

Sharing his thought, Tourism Minister Aaditya Thackeray said that the sports universities need to focus on training students both on-field and off-field. The departments should work on shaping students into good coaches so that they can get employment opportunities.

MP Sanjay Raut added that efforts should be made to promote sports in schools and colleges through this university. Besides this, the sub-center of the university should be in Delhi. Moreover, various departments should be set up to promote player participation of players from the state at international events. 

Sports and Youth Welfare Services Commissioner Bakoria gave an introductory presentation on Sports University which will provide world-class training to several students and staff members including school level sports teachers.
