While addressing the state on Sunday, May 31, 2020, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray stated that the university exams for final year students have been cancelled, and the scores will be given as per aggregates, based on the guidelines given by the UGC. The decision was taken keeping the coronavirus outbreak in mind and the CM stated that conducting exams amidst the lockdown is not possible, and it wouldn't be wise to put the lives of students at risk.

However, the question raised by students in ATKT or with a backlog, even today, remains unanswered. These students, in the previous semesters, were not able to pass the exams or appear for it, but their worries about giving exams are still unclear. After the announcement was made by the CM, several took to social media to write to the officials regarding these concerns.

Addressing this, Minister of Higher and Technical Education, Uday Samant, took to Twitter with an aim to put students to ease. In a post, he said, "Don't worry. I won't be scared and I won't step back. I will fight for you till the end."

In another tweet, he said, "To all the students who have of ATKT  or backlog, please do not worry. We are also worried about you. We will announce the decision at the right time and it will be in your interest."

Amidst all this, a few days after the CM made the announcement, Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari expressed his disappointment over the decision stating that the decision regarding the university exams need to be thought again and as a chancellor of universities in the state, he chose to overrule CMs decision. The same was expressed on Twitter.

However, Sena slammed his decision. Calling this as a 'move' from the opposition party, Uddhav Thackeray-led government said that these tactics will not affect MVA's strength. Questioning the new decision, an official from the Sena questioned the possibility of conducting the exams for lakhs of students, further emphasising that the decision to cancel the exams is practical.
