According to a report of Praja Foundation, there are only 3,237 public washrooms for women in Mumbai.

Mumbai has one of the highest working population with women being par with men. Many women come to Mumbai city for work from far off places like Thane and Navi Mumbai with public washroom being the basic facility that they avail.

According to reports by Praja Foundation, there are only 3,237 public toilets for women available. According to 2011 census, Mumbai accounts for 1,42,49,083 women population. With just 3,237 public toilets, it is an average of 1 toilet for 4,401 women let alone the condition and unavailability of basic facilities in the toilets.

South Mumbai accounts for 1,499 public toilets for women with Western suburbs and Central suburbs having 941 and 797 toilets respectively. As compared to women, there are more public washrooms for men i.e. 9,646 with 4,762 in South Mumbai along with 2,667 and 2,297 in Western and Central suburbs respectively.

Notably, Praja Foundation is a non-partisan organisation working towards enabling accountable governance since 1999. It empowers citizens to participate in governance by providing knowledge and perspective so that they can become politically active and involved beyond the ballot box. It also undertakes extensive research and highlights civic issues to build the awareness of, and mobilize action by the government and Elected Representatives (ERs).
