The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Maharashtra has expressed shock over the recent Nagpada building collapse in Mumbai. The Kejriwal-led party said that the collapses of buildings in the metropolitan have become a "regular feature of the monsoon season.”

In a statement, the AAP blamed the state government and the Briahnmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) of taking a "callous approach" towards the loss of human life. “The life of the aam aadmi (common man) is cheap, with government apathy and corruption literally endangering lives,” it said.

"Our heart reaches out to the families of victims of these tragedies. Building Collapses have now sadly, become a regular feature of the monsoon season. Dilapidated buildings are disasters waiting to happen,” the statement read.

The party has also demanded that BMC rehabilitate the residents of buildings which are in a ramshackle condition. Mumbaikars are being forced to live in these appalling conditions, due to lack of affordable housing.

“Why can't the BMC rehabilitate those who live in these crumbling buildings which are unfit for human habitation?” AAP leader Preeti Sharma Menon said while demanding the BMC to carry out an appraisal of structures and facilitate rehabilitation.

Earlier on Thursday afternoon, two people died after a large portion of buildings - Mishra Mansion and Abdul Rehman Building - in Mumbai’s Nagpada collapsed. The firefighters were able to rescue an 11-year-old girl who was trapped under the debris.

The toilet block of the three-storey building, ground plus two, caved in around 1:00 in the afternoon and it was feared that four people are trapped under the debris.
