“We have to decide whether to get intimidated by the central government or fight them. If we don’t decide it, we will meet and discuss every day. However, if we want to fight, we have to do it at any cost,” Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said during a meeting with Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

The meeting was organised by Sonia Gandhi via video conferencing to discuss GST, JEE-NEET exam issue and economic situation of the country and states. The meeting was attended by opposition Chief Ministers of six states and Puducherry including West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren.

In the meeting, Thackeray criticised the Modi government for undermining states and their rights. He pointed out that they have also been elected by those who voted for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and said that no one can suppress the voice of the people.

“In the current situation, the country seems to be in the hands of only one person. What is the use of state governments? The people who elect the Prime Minister and the state government are the same. We are also representatives of people, like them. No one can suppress the voice of the people,” Thackeray said.

The Maharashtra CM further informed that his government was not in favour of reopening schools and highlighted that the unlocking of economic activities has already been initiated.

“In the United States of America, 97,000 children reportedly contracted the coronavirus after the schools were reopened. What will we do if such a situation happens here?” Thackeray asked.

On the issue of GST returns from the central government, Thackeray said that they should make an appeal before the Modi government for the same. “We are not begging but we are asking for our rights,” he added.
