The National Alliance against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR) on Wednesday announced a protest in Mumbai to press their demands.

This is their biggest agitation, MahaMorcha, which will be held on February 15 (Saturday) at Azad Maidan from 2:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon. The organisation has asked the three-party Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government for their support.

While addressing the press conference, Retired Justice BG Kolse Patil said that this agitation is for all those who will be affected by the CAA and proposed NRC. Justice Patil is the convener of the alliance in Maharashtra.

The leaders and workers from Congress, NCP and Shiv Sena – MVA government – may join the protest organised by the National Alliance against CAA, NRC and NPR. This is an umbrella organisation which has the support of several outfits and NGOs.

The co-convener of the alliance in Mumbai, Hasib Bhatkar informed that they have tried to explain to the people that the new citizenship law is discriminatory.

“We have tried to reach and explain the people of all religion and faith, caste and creed that this amendment in the citizenship act is discriminatory and against the spirit and letters of the constitution. We will protest against the same till the government revokes the decision,” Bhatkar was quoted by The Free Press Journal.

The agitation will be peaceful and will be carried out democratically at Azad Maidan, the members of the alliance added.

The protests against CAA and the proposed NRC have intensified in the country. However, the central government is adamant that it will not revoke the newly amended citizenship law.
