Mumbai Police on Thursday busted a fake TRP racket and shared details regarding the same in a press conference held in the city. Param Bir Singh, Mumbai Police Commissioner, named three channels involved in the scam including Republic TV.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly raised objections to the same. Union Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Minister Prakash Javadekar said that people of India will not tolerate strangulation of the media.

Javadekar attacked Congress and its allies over the fake TRP scam saying that targeting media is against all principles of democracy and is unacceptable.

“Free press is a defining feature of our democracy and a cherished ideal of the Constitution. Trampling on media freedom will not be tolerated by people of India,” the Union Minister said.

TV channels - Republic TV, Fakt Marathi and Box Cinema - are said to be involved in the racket, and officials have arrested the owners of Marathi channels Fakt Marathi and Box Cinema. Investigations are being carried out with the senior members of Republic TV and Goswami will be quizzed as well.

The BJP and Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government have been in a constant tussle for months over the demise of Bollywood Actor Sushant Singh Rajput. Republic TV challenged the Maharashtra government and Mumbai Police on several occasions in connection with the SSR death case.

Now, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Forensic Medical Board has ruled out the murder angle and said that demise of SSR was a suicide and death by hanging.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Police have also started the probe after identifying 80,000 fake accounts on social media platforms to defame the Maharashtra government and police.
