Maharashtra Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Chandrakant Patil slammed Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar asking him to go solo in the next assembly elections in Maharashtra.

Taking a dig at Pawar, the BJP leader said that NCP should contest the next assembly elections in Maharashtra alone to find out where it stands and how much political support it has on the ground.

Patil’s remarks come after Pawar said that BJP leader approached the NCP multiple times to form the government after their break up with Shiv Sena during the political deadlock over the chief ministerial post after the 2019 Maharashtra assembly polls.

In his recent interview series in ‘Saamana’, the NCP chief also revealed that his offer to support the BJP from outside in 2014 was a political ploy to create differences between the Shiv Sena and the saffron party. Shiv Sena leader and Executive Editor of ‘Saamana’ Sanjay Raut took the marathon interview of first non-Sena leader.

Reacting to this, Patil said that BJP is the single largest party in Maharashtra with 105 seats in the state legislative assembly. If Congress and NCP had contested the assembly polls in 2019 alone, they would have only got 10 and 20 seats, respectively.

“BJP knows where it stands in terms of political support from people. People voted for BJP as the single largest party and has the support of the masses. If Congress and NCP had contested the 2019 assembly polls separately, they would have won on 10 and 20 seats respectively,” the BJP leader said.

Patil further said that all parties including Congress, NCP, Shiv Sena and BJP should contest the next assembly elections alone to find out where each stands in terms of political support. “The BJP is ready to contest the polls solo,” he asserted.

In the 2019 assembly elections in Maharashtra, BJP and Shiv Sena contested the polls together and won on 105 and 56 seats respectively while the NCP won 54 seats and Congress won on 44 seats.
