According to reports, the local body polls proclaimed by the State Election Commission (SEC) in 92 Nagar Parishad and four Nagar panchayats across 17 districts in the state could get deferred. This is because all political parties unanimously stated that elections should not transpire without OBC reservation.

Recently, Maharashtra Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, on Saturday, July 9 met Solicitor General Tushar Mehta. They requested Mehta to represent the state's case in the Supreme Court (SC) to restore the OBC reservation in local body elections.

Shinde was quoted in accounts elaborating on how they are going to urge the SEC to defer the elections because the condition is not conducive in the aftermath of floods in several parts of the state

Based on accounts, the SEC had proclaimed local body elections on Friday, July 8, in accordance with which the election is set to take place on August 18 and the declaration of results on August 19. Many Congress, BJP and NCP leaders have objected to holding elections without the OBC quota.

The SEC reportedly declared that Nagar Parishad polls will transpire in Jalgaon, Solapur, Jalna, Pune, Beed, Osmanabad, Nandurbar, Aurangabad, Amravati, Latur, Buldhana, Nashik, Dhule, Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur and Ahmednagar. Further, four Nagar panchayat polls will happen in Pune, Ahmednagar and Solapur. In these districts, the code of conduct will be enforced starting July 20.

For those unversed, last year, the SC removed the OBC reservation in local body polls. It asked the Maharashtra government to abide by the tripe test. However, since the requirements remain unfulfilled, the procedure of restoring the OBC quota has been stalled.

This decision by the SC has invariably had an impact on the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. Now, ahead of the BMC elections

Shiv Sena chief and former Maharashtra Chief Minister, Uddhav Thackeray conducted a meeting with office bearers and asked them to strengthen the organization across Mumbai, reports stated.

Thackeray conducted a meeting at Matoshree wherein he allegedly highlighted that many zonal heads could be replaced with party loyalists ahead of the BMC polls. A functionary was quoted in narratives elaborating on how some sitting office bearers could join the Shinde camp, thus with the BMC elections in mind, alterations will be made in the organizations.

With the Thackeray camp losing considerable MLAs to Shinde, the BMC elections are anticipated to be the make or break for Shiv Sena.
