In the wake of increasing crimes against women, the state government has decided to bring in 'Nirbhaya Centre' in KEM Hospital, Parel in the next three months. These centres will help the victims in getting medical and legal help as well. The same was announced by Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the winter session of Maharashtra Assembly.

Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar mentioned the infamous case of a 17-year-old gang-rape survivor who was abducted and raped twice in 2016 and 2017 respectively. She is a mentally challenged girl who lives in a slum in Dindoshi with her parents.

Shelar with the reference to the case said that Nirbhaya Centres are the need of the hour.

Nirbhaya Centres came into the picture after 23-year-old Jyoti Singh, a medical student, was brutally gang-raped in a moving bus in Delhi and was left to die in 2012. Despite treatment, she never came back to life. After her death, she was given many pseudonyms by media houses and one such name was Nirbhaya which became the identity of that case.

After her death, the Delhi government decided to launch Nirbhaya centres to address rape-victims in terms of medical and legal help. Shelar added that the centres came up in Delhi but not in Mumbai and so it should happen as soon as possible. He said that he has been following up the issue with police and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation for the last 1.5 years.

CM addressed Shelar’s question and replied that such centres will be launched within three months at KEM Hospital.
