The state government of Maharashtra has been taking strict measures to ensure coronavirus (COVID-19) cases do not increase across the state. Directives have been given to all the districts to prepare for the third COVID wave. Though the government has allowed relaxations in the state, decisions are yet to be taken about opening temples and other places of worship.

In a discussion held on Sunday, September 5, 2021, CM Uddhav Thackeray informed that the COVID cases might increase if these are reopened. Furthermore, if the situation worsens, then they would have to be shut once again. Citizens across the state have been waiting for the same to open considering the festive season, and protests are being held demanding the same. Sharing information regarding the same, he requested the people to not protest further asking them to wait due to COVID crisis.

ANI quoted the CM and said, “I request people not to protest for the reopening of temples and other places. If you want to protest, protest against Covid-19,” news agency ANI quoted the Maharashtra chief minister as saying. “Some people are in hurry to reopen some establishments. I request them to wait for some time because we don’t want to open these places and then close again if the situation gets worse.

Suggestions were sought from experts regarding the same. Moreover, discussions were also held with doctors from Maharashtra regarding the third wave and the predicted crisis. The announcement was made considering the same and also as a response for the protest staged by the opposition party.

Similar guidelines and directives were also issued from the central government asking the state to restrict entry at such establishments, during the festivals, as this could increase the number of cases and also increase the fear during the third wave.

Maharashtra has reported over 6.4 million COVID cases, and was one of the worst hit states in India during both the first and second COVID wave. Though the cases had reduced across the state in the last few months, officials has noted a surge in cases, especially among the children, during the last few weeks. The daily COVID tally in Maharashtra has risen to over 4000 as per the data shared by the health department. Necessary steps have been implement to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the state.
