Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Devendra Fadnavis on Monday slammed the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (VMA) government for asking IPS Amitabh Gupta to resume work.

Amitabh Gupta, Principal Secretary (Special) in the Home Department, was sent on compulsory leave by the Maharashtra government after a letter signed by him got leaked. The permission letter was for Wadhawan family and their friends consisting of 23 people to travel to Mahabaleshwar from Khandala during the lockdown period.

The Wadhawan brothers - Kapil and Dheeraj Wadhawan - are accused in DHFL and Yes Bank fraud case and have been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh had also launched a high-level probe into the matter which was carried out by Additional Chief Secretary (Finance) Manoj Saunik and the report was submitted to Home Ministry. The enquiry report into the allegations against Gupta concluded that he exceeded his jurisdiction.

However, Fadnavis said that it was not possible for a bureaucrat to take such a decision without having the support of the top leadership. The senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader has demanded a CBI probe to find out the culprit in the matter.

“We have been saying since inception that a senior officer like Amitabh Gupta will never take such a decision without pressure from someone in the government,” Fadnavis said.

Earlier, the panel probing the role of IPS Amitabh Gupta exonerated him after which the senior bureaucrat resumed his duty. Reacting to this, Fadnavis said that the “clean chit” given to Gupta shows that the government’s decision to send him on mandatory leave was an “eyewash”.

Meanwhile, the opposition leader demanded the Maharashtra government to create a dashboard for bed availability in Mumbai’s hospitals. Fadnavis informed that he has been getting calls from the relatives of patients in Mumbai who have told him that they are not getting admission to any hospital in the city.
