Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday wrote a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray while expressing his concern about decreasing number of tests and increasing fatalities due to COVID-19.

Fadnavis has alleged that there was a 50 per cent drop in the number of COVID-19 tests carried out in Mumbai last month. In his letter, the BJP leader said that Mumbai was worst-hit by the coronavirus pandemic and reduction in testing was worrisome even as the mortality rates were increasing.

Fadnavis called for “aggressive testing” and informed that labs in Mumbai had the capacity to conduct 10,000 COVID-19 tests daily but only 3,500 to 4,000 were being carried out every day.

The letter further said that of total tests carried out in Maharashtra, 56 per cent were carried out in Mumbai on May 1. However, the rate was dropped to 40 per cent on May 15 and the same is only 27 per cent now.

Since the case positivity rate is 31 to 32 per cent which is very high, the tests would have to be increased but there is a drop in the same by 50 per cent, Fadnavis said while alleging that attempts have been made to hide COVID-19 deaths.

Fadnavis also highlighted the growing instances where the COVID-19 is not mentioned as the cause of death in death certificates. The BJP leader said that the death certificates of a 41-year old Vile Parle resident and a 65-year-old Bhandup resident failed to mention COVID-19.

As of June 4, the number of COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra has risen to 77,793 and the death toll has reached 2,710. As per the health ministry, Maharashtra has reported 2,560 fresh cases and 122 deaths in 24 hours. In Mumbai alone, the number of COVID-19 cases has increased to 44,931.
