As per reports, complaints have been lodged with the Election Commission against CM Uddhav Thackeray, his son Aaditya Thackeray and NCP MP Supriya Sule alleging discrepancies in the poll affidavits.

These prominent faces in Maharashtra politics could face scrutiny for allegedly giving out false information regarding their personal assets or withholding information regarding the same. However, the Shiv Sena party had earlier dismissed the move stating that it was a routine process to cross-check information with the income tax authority.

The Election Commission back in the month of June had changed its stand on dealing with false election affidavits. On June 16, the Commission had announced that it would take hold of the complaints against candidates filing incorrect information on criminal history, assets and liabilities along with educational qualifications in their election affidavits.

Currently, under Section 125A of RP Act, if a person is found guilty of lying in her or his affidavit, the person could face a six-month prison term, or fine, or both. The EC in a statement to the Supreme Court had earlier stated that this punishment is well short of the requirement of a minimum of two years of a sentence for attracting disqualification under Section 8A of the election law.
