Farmers’ protest successful; State agrees 80 per cent of their demands

The Maharashtra government has vowed that they would meet the demands of farmers on March 12,, who marched 180 km from Nashik to Mumbai demanding a complete farm loan waiver and implementation of the MS Swaminathan Commission.

Around 1:30 pm, the farmers' delegation met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to discuss their demands. After the meeting, the CM announced that he has agreed to 80 per cent of their demands and the same was then announced to the farmers who were anxiously waiting at Azad Maidan for the outcome.

The Demands That Were Met

  • The farmers who were demanding they should be made the owners of the entire land, was met by the Fadnavis government. The state would implement within six months the farmers’ demand for ownership of land
  • Implementation of Forest Act will begin in two months
  • CM also promised that he would relax some of the conditions for loan waiver eligibility
  • Ration cards will be issued to farmers on an immediate basis
  • Fadnavis said that the government will consider both husband and wife for loan waiver with a benefit cap of ₹1.5 lakh
  • The CM also assured that he would pursue the matter with the Centre over its assurance of a minimum support price 1.5 times the cost of production

On March 6, 2018, thousands of farmers from various districts gathered in Nashik before a six-day long march to Mumbai which began on Tuesday afternoon. The long march was called by the Left-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Kisan Sabha (ABKS). They also received the support from the Peasants and Workers Party and CPI.
