Amid the concerns of OBC community in Maharashtra regarding their reservation quota, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray assured that the reservation for Maratha community in jobs and education will not affect the quota for Other Backward Classes.

While speaking at a meeting, Thackeray said that a meeting between representatives of the OBC community and the state’s advocate general to allay and address the doubts on the issue.

The meeting was organised between the Chief Minister and the representatives of the OBCs including Prakash Shendge of the OBC VJNT Sangharsh Samiti via video conference which was attended by Maharashtra Minister Vijay Wadettiwar, Ashok Chavan, Eknath Shinde, Chhagan Bhujbal, Dhananjay Munde among others.

“The Maratha reservation matter is pending in the Supreme Court. The OBC community fears that if the High Court decision is upheld in the Supreme Court, the OBC reservation will be affected. But they should get rid of this fear,” Thackeray asserted.

Meanwhile, Bhujbal also stated that no injustice will happen to the OBC community because of Maratha reservation quota. Efforts will be made to provide maximum financial assistance to OBC ‘mahamandals’, he said while adding that all the colleagues in the cabinet are positive on the demands of the OBCs.

The Supreme Court has refused interim stay on the decision of Bombay High Court upholding the Maratha reservation under Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) cleared by the Maharashtra government in 2018.

However, the Bombay HC last year had objected to the 16 per cent slab in Maratha quota and said that the same should not exceed 12 per cent in jobs and 13 per cent in education. This was recommended by the state backward classes commission.

The apex court has announced that it will start daily hearings on the petitions challenging the Maratha quota in Maharashtra from July 27 via video conferencing.
