Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Corporator Mukund Keni who was tested positive for COVID-19 died in Mumbai on Tuesday night after his health deteriorated. The 58-year-old NCP leader was admitted to a private hospital in the city where he was undergoing treatment.
Keni was the NCP corporator from Kalwa which comes under the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC). According to media reports, he tested positive for COVID-19 nearly 14 days ago on May 27 and was on ventilator support. Keni is survived by his son, grandsons, daughter-in-law and wife Pramila Keni, who is the opposition leader in the TMC.
NCP leader Jitendra Awhad expressed grief over the demise of Keni and said that the party has lost its strong pillar today. Keni contracted the coronavirus while assisting a COVID-19 positive patient. He developed symptoms two days later and was admitted to a private hospital.
Keni, who had diabetes, was transferred to Mumbai after being admitted to a private hospital in Thane as he tested positive for COVID-19.
Earlier, on the same day, Shiv Sena corporator Harishchandra Amgaonkar also succumbed to COVID-19 in Thane. Amagaonkar (55) was the corporator in the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC).
The deceased corporator had tested positive for COVID-19 a week back and was on ventilator support at a hospital in Thane city. Amgaonkar is survived by his wife, son and an elderly mother who was also undergoing treatment at the hospital and recovered from the infection.
As of June 9, the number of COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra has risen to 90,787 and the death toll in the state has reached 3,289. In Mumbai alone, the number of cases has increased to 51,100.
