Ramdas Athawale, Minister of State (MoS) for Social Justice and Empowerment in the Narendra Modi government, has suggested that Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Sonia Gandhi-led Congress should be merged.

Since Rahul and Sonia Gandhi are not ready to head the Congress, NCP should merge with Congress and Sharad Pawar should lead the same, the Republican Party of India (A) chief said.

“Rahul and Sonia Gandhi, both are not ready to take up the top position in Congress. My advice is that Congress should merge with NCP and Sharad Pawar should be elected as the National President of Congress. Rahul Gandhi and Sharad Pawar should discuss the same,” Athawale said.

The remarks made by the Union Minister come in the backdrop of the Congress’ leadership crisis. Earlier, 23 senior Congress leaders wrote a letter to Sonia Gandhi expressing that the party needs an active leadership and changes in its working.

However, in a Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting which was held last month, it was decided that Sonia Gandhi would continue as the interim president and the new chief will be elected in the next All India Congress Committee (AICC) session.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena slammed the 23 senior leaders who demanding full-time leadership in Congress. In an editorial published in ‘Saamana’, the Sena said that it was a “conspiracy to finish off Rahul Gandhi’s leadership”.

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut earlier said that Gandhi family was the Aadhar card. He praised Rahul Gandhi and said that he has the potential to lead. Stating that Congress is the main opposition party in the country, the Shiv Sena leader said that the internal issues need to be resolved.
