CST - Congress spokesperson Raju Waghmare has alleged that the Shiv Sena and the BJP are conspiring to demolish 10 lakh shanties constructed on the land of Central government. The UPA government had made a law to protect 10 lakh huts from demolition till 2000. But the NDA government of the BJP and Shiv Sena are trying to evict the people residing in these shanties across the city, said Waghmare.
The NDA government is planning to privatise the government land which will eventually evict 50 lakh people. On one hand, the Central government speaks of constructing 11 lakh homes under different schemes but on the other hand, chief minister is planning to demolish these huts, he added.
The Indira Nagar Rahiwasi Sangh, a slum area near railway premises in Jogeshwari East is being demolished. The Railways had ordered demolition of around 225 huts in 2000 and Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray had assured not to raze these huts. Now, Shiv Sena minister Ravindra Waikar has been misleading the slum people. As per government rule, it is a responsibility of the government to protect the slum-dwellers but it failed to take their side in the court which would result in the question mark on the existence of 10 lakh huts in the city, claimed Waghmare.
