Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut recently raised objections to the lifting of lockdown in Pune as the number of coronavirus cases is rapidly increasing. Although Raut didn’t name Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar who is also the guardian minister of Pune, he indirectly blamed the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) for the rise in COVID-19 cases.

Pune has been one of the worst affected cities in Maharashtra and the country. As of September 7, Pune has 61,781 active cases which are the highest in the country.  Amid this, the criticism of COVID-19 handling by the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government from the opposition parties has intensified.

The difference of opinion between the three-party (Shiv Sena, NCP, Congress) alliance to lift lockdown restrictions is not a hidden secret and Raut’s remarks confirm the same. He said that the lockdown in Pune was lifted in hurry despite the Chief Minister not being in favour of it.

Last week, a Pune-based journalist died and his family members alleged that they didn’t get the ambulance on time. Reacting to this, Raut said that the government should avoid such incidents. He also informed that the Mumbai pattern was being followed in Pune to tackle the COVID-19 situation.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pravin Darekar said that the state government has “messed up” the handling of COVID-19 situation and the journalist’s death was its latest example.

“The state of the healthcare system in Maharashtra is messed up. Not everyone gets treatment on time. The condition in the hospitals is deplorable. The Chief Minister went to Pune and inaugurated a COVID centre. A journalist died in Pune and a simple ambulance couldn’t be made available,” Darekar, Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra legislative council said.

Since its inception, Sharad Pawar-led NCP has been in favour of lifting the lockdown to restart economic activities but Uddhav Thackeray has always preferred to take a cautious approach when it comes to unlocking.
