Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Udyanraje Bhosale on Thursday took an oath as the newly elected member of Rajya Sabha in Delhi. He chanted slogans - ‘Jai Bhavani, Jai Shivaji' - to honour the Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at the end of his oath.

However, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu raised an objection to the same and said that no slogans were allowed in the house. Naidu, the Rajya Sabha chairman, was administering the oath to 45 of the 61 newly elected members in the upper house.

“It not a house. It is my chamber. Nothing will go on the record, only the oath. The new members should keep in mind that no slogans are allowed in the house,” Naidu said.

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut was the first to raise an objection and taunted the BJP for being silent over the issue. Raut also took a dit at Sambhaji Bhide - chief of Shiv Pratishthan Hindustan - saying that he hasn’t announced any ‘bandh’ in Satara-Sangli.

“Who will issue a certificate on whether the descendent of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was insulted in Delhi or not? The BJP is silent on the issue and Sambhaji Bhide has also not announced any ‘bandh’ in Satara-Sangli,” Raut tweeted in Marathi.

Raut has also said that slogans - ‘Jai Bhavani’ and ‘Jai Shivaji’ - were as important as ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘Jai Hind’. Meanwhile, leaders from the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have also labelled Naidu’s remarks as “disrespectful”.

On July 23, Shiv Sena staged a protest at Aurangabad’s Sambhaji Nagar against Rajya Sabha chairman for “insulting” Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Sena leaders including Chandrakant Khaire and Ambadas Danve were present there.

Meanwhile, the Shiv Pratishthan replied to Raut saying that he wasn’t even aware that Satara is already shut due to the lockdown. “No permission is required to hail Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in any part of the country. Even when Devendra Fadnavis was the Chief Minister, we had protested for Udyanraje,” it said.

Udyanraje joined the BJP ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha elections after resigning from the NCP.
