“The reply given by the Chief Minister in Marathi to Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari’s letter is English is a historic document,” Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut while criticising the governor for being disrespectful to the Maharashtra government.

On Monday, Koshyari wrote a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray questioning the government’s decision to keep the places of worship closed in Maharashtra. The Governor further questioned Thackeray’s commitment to Hindutva and mocked him for turning ‘secular’.

Responding to this, the Chief Minister said that looking after the health and welfare of the citizens was his government’s primary duty and opening temples would not be feasible amid the COVID-19 outbreak. Thackeray further said that he doesn’t need any lessons or certificate in Hindutva from the Governor.

Reacting to the ward of words, Raut said that the Governor should only see whether Maharashtra is being run as per the constitution or not and the elected government can look after the rest of things.

Raut, Shiv Sena chief spokesperson, said that his party’s Hindutva is firm and based on strong foundations. “We don’t need lessons in Hindutva,” he asserted while adding that it was Thackeray’s responsibility to take care of the citizens and the Governor should rather appreciate the Chief Minister.

The Governor’s remarks have caused massive outrage among people on social media. Many have accused Koshyari of disrespecting the secular values of the constitution.

In his reply to Koshyari’s political taunt, Thackeray said that secularism is the core of the oath taken by the Governor.

“Do you mean that opening religious places is Hindutva and not doing it means secular? Do you not believe that secularism is the core aspect of the oath you took as a Governor?” Thackeray responded.
