On April 23, actor Sunny Deol joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after the speculations of the Gadar star taking the political plunge had started doing rounds. The rumours began surfacing when Deol met the party president Amit Shah at Pune airport.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman welcomed him to the party and said that he has always been a patriot. Referring to his 1997 film ‘Border’, she stated that the movie shows how the feeling of nationalism and patriotism, when portrayed beautifully on film can touch a cord with the people.

Meanwhile, after his meeting with Amit Shah, Deol had been non-committal and had earlier stated that he had heard of rumours of him joining the party. He added that they both had just met and taken a photograph.

He is the third Deol to join politics - and the BJP - after Dharmendra and his wife Hema Malini. There is a strong possibility that the actor might be fielded from the Gurdaspur constituency in Punjab.

Punjab will vote in a single phase, on May 19, the last day of the seven-phased national election. The results of the staggered polls will be announced on May 23.
