Transgenders from Mumbai meet governor to discuss matters affecting the community

Members from the delegation said that the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has affected lives of many transgenders who suffered health ailments due to unavailability of medication and proper nutrition.

Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, on Tuesday, October 5, 2021, met a delegation of transgender community and discussed matters related to  issues and obstacles faced by transgenders in the city. 

As per a report published in the Free Press Journal, the delegation spoke about 'empowerment, fundamental rights and needs of the community' and shared information about the 'loss of livelihood and lack of financial support the community faced during the lockdown and the pandemic.'

The delegation was led by the President of Kinnar Maa Ek Samajik Sanstha, Salma Khan, who said that the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has affected lives of many transgenders who suffered health ailments due to unavailability of medication and proper nutrition. The financial status of a few members worsened too and they were unable to pay rents and take of basic needs. Appeals were made by the members to support the community and help the members in meeting the basic rights.

In a conversation with the publication, Salman Khan said, "On 5 October, 2021 under Legal Awareness week we had a meeting with the Governor of Maharashtra at Rajbhavan, Mumbai. We took up issues and needs of transgender community in regards to nutrition, shelter home, healthcare services, education, employment, social protection, social and economic empowerment."

Other members from the delegation also spoke about the matters relating to housing, education, development of skills, etc.. Blaming the system the members said that the CM needs to meet them in person to understand the problems and not announce the schemes without knowing the actual condition. They also emphasised that the allocated funds for every transgender were not given and this has affected their livelihoods.

However, after listening to them, Governor Koshyari offered assurance stating that their needs and issues will be resolved soon. 

Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, in August 2021, organised mobile vaccination centers  in Mumbai for transgenders, construction workers, prostitutes and HIV patients. Besides this, initiatives like drive-in vaccination, home-based vaccination of bedridden citizens, drive of pregnant women, etc. were arranged by the civic body.
