Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar are in favour of the resumption of Mumbai’s local train service. Moreover, Thackeray and Pawar on Saturday also asked the centre to provide more trains for the migrants who are stranded in Maharashtra.

The state government wants the Mumbai suburban trains to resume operations at least for essential service workers, according to Time of India. A senior NCP leader informed that Pawar has spoken to Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal while Uddhav Thackeray has written at least three letters to him demanding the resumption of suburban trains.

This comes after Thackeray and Pawar held a review meeting on Saturday regarding COVID-19 situation in Maharashtra. In this meeting, Maharashtra Water Resource Minister Jayant Patil and chief secretary Ajoy Mehta were present among other officials.

Meanwhile, despite centre’s announcement to resume domestic air travel from May 25, the Maharashtra government refused any flights in the state and especially in Mumbai. The state government said that it will only consider flights for an emergency and international transfer of passengers.

On Friday, Thackeray and Pawar participated in a meeting with the opposition parties at the national level to discuss the COVID-19 situation in the country and the centre’s handling of the same.

The Congress had sent an invitation to 18 parties in opposition to the centre including the left parties and Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC). This was the maiden meeting with opposition parties for Thackeray after taking oath as the Maharashtra Chief Minister.

However, sources say that Thackeray spoke about COVID-19 situation in Maharashtra and measures taken by his government Along with this, the CM spoke about arrangements made for migrant workers and the pending GST returns from the centre.

Earlier, the NCP supremo has also spoken about the need to restore road transport within the states and plan to resume rail services.
