Maharashtra Water Resource Minister Jayant Patil has informed that nearly 50 million cubic litre water has been released from Upper Vatarna dam for consumption in Mumbai. This comes after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) demanded the same.

Taking to Twitter, Patil informed that there was no shortage of water for Mumbai since there is enough stock available in Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa dams which supply water to the financial capital.

“As per the demand made by the BMC, 50 million cubic litres of water has bee released from Upper Vaitarna dam to quench the thirst of Mumbaikars. There will be no shortage of water in Mumbai as there is sufficient water in Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa dams which supply water to Mumbai,” Patil tweeted in Marathi on Friday.

Mumbai gets its water supply from seven lakes - Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Tansa, Vihar, Modak Sagar and Tulsi. During the monsoon, the water in the lakes gets collected in huge amount which eliminates the problem of water shortage in Mumbai.

The BMC officials have earlier said that Mumbai will not face any water cuts and no such decision was taken regarding the same. Water has gained more significance amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Mumbai has been receiving bountiful rainfall since Thursday night. In the last 24 hours too the central and northern suburbs have received heavy to very heavy rains but there has been a significant decrease in the southern suburbs, according to Skymet.

On and off rain and thundershowers are expected to continue over Mumbai and suburbs for at least next 24 hours in moderate intensity.
