Days after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held “Maharashtra Bachao” protest across the state, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday said that the coronavirus pandemic shouldn’t be politicised, without naming the opposition.

“I urge everyone not to politicise the matter in such crucial times. I will not resort to playing politics but I won’t. We are vested with responsibilities and the people of Maharashtra trust us,” Thackeray said.

Earlier, BJP leaders and workers protested against the Uddhav Thackeray government to highlight the “ineffective handling” of COVID-19 crisis in the state. Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Devendra Fadnavis has also demanded an economic package for the state on the lines of one announced by the centre.

Reacting to this, Uddhav Thackeray said that the focus of the Maharashtra government was healthcare as it was crucial right now and the government will provide for everything. Without naming the opposition, Thackeray said that the government was being criticised for not giving package but its focus is on healthcare right now.

“Packages have been announced in the past also, but they were nothing but hollow promises and our government doesn’t believe in those hollow promises,” the Chief Minister said while taking a dig at the opposition.

Providing treatment and giving food to people was crucial and important right now, Thackeray said while announcing that the coverage of Mahatma Jyotiba insurance scheme is now 100 per cent.

Moreover, over 6 lakh migrant workers and labourers have been provided food till now and the state government was demanding the centre to provide more trains for the stranded migrants to go to their native homes, Thackeray said.

“The Maharashtra government has paid ₹85 crore railway fare for around seven lakh migrants who have gone to their homes on these trains. We are demanding the centre to provide 80 trains on a daily basis but we are getting only 40 trains,” the Chief Minister said.

Around 32,000 trips have been made by the State buses since May 5 which are being run to drop migrants to the border, Thackeray informed while adding that 3.8 lakh migrants were transported and the state government spent ₹75 crores on the same.
