64-year-old dies due to a cardiac arrest at Tata Mumbai Marathon

Gajanan Maljalkar, a retired officer of Canara bank, collapsed after 4km and was taken to Bombay Hospital where he was declared dead. Six others suffered cardiac arrest at the Mumbai Marathon and are being treated at the hospital.

One of Mumbai's most popular events, Tata Mumbai Marathon, was held on Sunday, where more than 55,000 runners participated in the event. Some of the runners this year were admitted to hospital, owing to health issues during the marathon. 

As per reports, seven participants suffered a cardiac arrest and one passed away today during the marathon. Identified as Gajanan Maljalkar, the 64 year old is a retired officer of Canara bank and a resident of Nalasopara.।t is said that he was running in the senior citizens category and collapsed after running 4km and was taken to the Bombay Hospital where he was declared dead. Other patients were admitted to a nearby hospital and are being treated for the condition.

HuffPost India spoke to a doctor at the Bombay Hospital and reported that Maljalkar suffered from other ailments like diabetes and hypertension. Futhermore, other runners who were being treated also suffered ailments like obesity and diabetes.

The event was held in the presence of many celebrities and personalities. Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray flagged off the Dream Run who all received a finisher medal after the race. Other popular names like Tiger Shroff, Gulzar, Aaditya Thackeray and many others were also present at the event.

Runners participated in the 5k, 10k, 21k and 42k routes at the Tata Mumbai Marathon 2020.
