The Maharashtra government has demanded the Indian Railways to allow employees working in various central government offices. For now, the employees working in the essential sectors as identified by the state government are allowed to travel by local trains.

The Western and Central Railways decided to start the train services of Mumbai for employees in essential sectors from June 15. After multiple requests from Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, the train services were resumed for nearly 1.25 lakh essential employees including the Western Railway staff of 50,000.

Now, the Maharashtra government has asked the Indian Railway to allow employees working in various central government establishment to travel in Mumbai’s local trains. This includes employees from the Income Tax Department, Mumbai Port Trust, High Court and public sector banks.

However, the state government clarified that the final decision remains in the hands of the Ministry of Railways. For now, the local train services in Mumbai are the only operation for essential staff and no general passengers are allowed to board the train.

If the railways allow travel for employees working in central establishments, the head offices of the staffers will be required to issue passes. All the employees will be bound to follow the guidelines for travel laid down by the state government.

Under Maharashtra government’s ‘Mission Begin Again’, the resumption of economic activities in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and other districts have been permitted. The private offices have also been allowed to operate but at 10 per cent strength.

The employees working in public sector banks and government offices are still waiting for approval from the Indian Railways. The local train network spreads from Churchgate in Mumbai city to Dahanu on the Western Railway line while the Central Railway route stretches from CSMT to Kasara and Khopoli and the harbour line route is between CSMT to Panvel.
