In a major development, eight new Omicron variant cases detected in Maharashtra on Tuesday, December 14. Of the total cases, seven are from Mumbai, while one is from Vasai-Virar, reports stated.

However, it has come to light that none of the infected persons have any international travel history, said the state health department. Though three patients had domestic travel history - Bangalore, Delhi and Rajasthan, respectively.

Meanwhile, three patients are asymptomatic and five have mild symptoms.

The close contacts of all are being traced. Of the eight cases, three are women and five are men. Whereas, two are at hospitals and six are under home isolation. Moreover, it has come to light that seven are vaccinated, while only one patient is not vaccinated.

With this, the total tally of the new coronavirus strain in Maharashtra reaches 28.

Of the 28 cases in Maharashtra, 12 are from Mumbai, 10 from Pimpri Chinchwad, two from Pune Municipal Corporation, and one each from Kalyan Dombivali, Nagpur, Latur and Vasai Virar.

This comes a day after two cases were reported in Maharashtra - one in Latur and the other in Pune, said the health department. In Pune, it is a 39-year old woman and in Latur, it is a 33-year-old male.

Out of these, nine patients have been discharged after negative RT-PCR test. Therefore, active cases count remains 19 in the state. Maharashtra has the highest number of Omicron cases among all the states and UTs across the nation.

Besides, Maharashtra on Tuesday, December 14, recorded 684 fresh cases and 24 deaths in 24 hours.

Amid rising concerns of the new coronavirus variant, Omicron, Mumbai has once again pulled up its socks and ramped up the COVID-19 testing drive for the passengers arriving in the city by railways, reports stated.

On the other hand, earlier in the day, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced to resume the physical classes for Std 1-7 from December 15.
