The Maharashtra government has made it compulsory for 50 per cent of the teaching staff from Class 1 to 9 to go to their respective schools as the academic year began on Tuesday, June 15.

Moreover, the state government issued a circular regarding the same. However, it did not specify what teachers are expected to do in schools. The principals reportedly stated they may ask teachers to take online lessons from the classrooms.

According to reports, for Class 11, 100 per cent attendance of lecturers/professors has been made mandatory. The state even wants all Class 10 and 12 teachers to be in their schools and colleges to carry out assessment work to declare the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary School (HSC) results.

Moreover, all working staff of the schools across the state have been asked to report to the institutes. In view of the situation, several teachers have expressed discontent about having to travel such long distances, especially since the Mumbai locals are only ferrying citizens engaged in essential services at the moment. Earlier on Monday, June 14, teachers across MMR protested by travelling ticketless to schools and voluntarily paying fines. In addition, teachers have warned of intensifying their protest if their demand to board trains are not met.

On the other hand, a year after schools across the state of Maharashtra halted their education process due to the outbreak of the coronavirus and the subsequent lockdown, preschool education, which caters to students between the ages of two and six years reportedly is the worst hit. As a result, several preschools, especially the standalone private ones, had to shut down as they could not afford to bear the costs of teachers and the infrastructure due to very low enrolments.
