A day after Maharashtra reported 11 new Omicron cases, State Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad on Wednesday, December 22, said that schools in the state may shut down if the number of patients infected with the latest strain continue to increase.

Nearly after two years, the physical classes resumed for standards 1-7 in the urban areas and 1-4 in the rural areas in December, which were shut due to outbreak of coronavirus. This followed resumption of physical lectures, on October 4, for students in classes 8-12 in the urban regions, and classes 4-12 in the rural ones.

Amid the threat of the new coronavirus variant, Omicron, the reopening of schools in Mumbai for grades 1-7 has been postponed to December 15, highlighted reports.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stated that all schools for grades 1 to 7 will reopen from Wednesday, December 15. Earlier the Maharashtra government had decided to reopen schools for primary students from December 1, in Mumbai.

Moreover, considering that schools for grades 1 to 7 resumed, the BMC's education department had written to its civic-operated schools to complete the preparations that include the vaccination of the staff, stated reports.

The Nashik Municipal Commissioner (NMC) on December 13, resumes physical classes for Std 1-7. The civic body had stayed the decision until December 10, considering the threat of the new coronavirus variant, Omicron. So far, no Omicron cases have been detected in the Nashik City.

In November, the state cabinet have the go-ahead of resuming physical classes for grades 1-7 in urban areas and 1-4 in rural areas.

Moreover, the Maharashtra government had issued the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the reopening of schools. The final decision, however, to reopen schools lies with the municipal commissioner.
