Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Udyanraje Bhosale on Thursday downplayed the controversy over slogan chanting in Rajya Sabha even as the leaders from Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) have alleged “insult” to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Bhosale, the 17th descendent of the Maratha warrior king, chanted slogans - ‘Jai Bhavani, Jai Shivaji - to honour Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at the end of his oath. However, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu objected to the same and said that no slogans were allowed in the house.

“It not a house. It is my chamber. Nothing will go on the record, only the oath. The new members should keep in mind that no other slogans are allowed in the house,” Naidu said.

This didn’t go well with several leaders in Maharashtra including Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut who cornered BJP over its silence on the issue saying that slogans - ‘Jai Bhavani, Jai Shivaji’ - were as important as ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘Jai Hind’.

However, while talking to the media in Delhi, Bhosale said that Naidu didn’t insult Chatrapati Shivaji in any way. He further asserted that if Shivaji Maharaj had been insulted he would have resigned immediately.

“I am not the one to remain quiet. I would have resigned at the very moment if Shivaji Maharaj had been insulted. Naidu said that you can take oath but not add anything else to it as it is not in line with the constitution,” Bhosale said adding that some people have made an issue out of it.

The BJP MP further said that Naidu didn’t do anything wrong or else he would have sought his apology.

Earlier, Shiv Sena staged a protest at Aurangabad’s Sambhaji Nagar against Rajya Sabha chairman for “insulting” Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Sena leaders including Chandrakant Khaire and Ambadas Danve were present there.
