In a six-hour virtual meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday requested the deployment of Central forces in the state as it will provide relief to police personnel working round the clock.

The police personnel are not only overworked but are also getting infected while discharging their duty, Uddhav Thackeray said. Over 1,000 police personnel in Maharashtra have been tested positive for the COVID-19 or coronavirus while seven have died due to the infection.

“Doctors, medical staff, and police are working round-the-clock, and need a respite. The police, who are maintaining law and order, need to take rest as they are falling sick due to long hours of work (sic),” the official handle of CMO Maharashtra said in a series of tweets.

The central government must make its manpower available to reduce the burden on the police, Thackeray said. Earlier, Uddhav Thackeray had rebuked the rumours of Indian Army being deployed in Mumbai but talked about seeking the help of additional forces from the centre in order to reduce the stress on the police and give them some rest.

Thackeray suggested that the Prime Minister should announce more relaxations in the lockdown rather than lifting it while pointing out the studies show that COVID-19 cases are likely to peak in June or July.

“The Prime Minister should show us specific and concrete direction on lockdown, the states will implement the same,” Thackeray told PM Modi.

Speaking on the movement of migrants, CM Uddhav Thackeray said that the workers are coming and going through different zones in the states which makes it mandatory for every state to take proper care or else the coronavirus will spread across the country.

The Chief Minister further informed that the migrants are being sent back to their homes after coordinating with other states. The Maharashtra government has provided food, shelter and medical assistance to 5.5 lakh migrant labourers, he added.
