“If Shiv Sena thinks that those who perform good deeds are all from BJP, we thank them for this,” Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Devendra Fadnavis said on Monday.
Fadnavis slammed the Shiv Sena for politicising COVID-19 relief work done by Bollywood Actor Sonu Sood who has helped thousands of migrant workers and labourers stuck in Mumbai without food and money during the lockdown.
Sood has been in the limelight for his efforts to reunite stranded migrant workers and labourers from their families and has got unparalleled media coverage.
While speaking to reporters, Fadnavis said that it makes him happy that Sonu Sood is being associated with the BJP. “If someone thinks that those who do good work are from the BJP, it makes us happy but Sonu Sood should be appreciated for his selfless work,” he said.
The senior BJP leader further said that Sood has tried to help the migrant workers. Taking a dig at Shiv Sena for criticising Sood for his relief work to send migrants back home, Fadnavis said that one should appreciate the kind of work the actor has done and not abuse him.
“We should stand behind Sood and not abuse him,” he said.
In Shiv Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamana’, Sanjay Raut raised questions over the creditability of Sood’s campaign and said that he was being backed by the BJP to create an image that Maharashtra government was not doing anything for the migrants.
Hours after Sena’s sharp criticism, Sood visited Matoshree to meet Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray along with state Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray and state Fisheries Minister Aslam Shaikh.
Raut’s remarks sparked outrage among Sood's supporters and admirers against the Shiv Sena and the Maharashtra government with opposition leaders including leaders from the ruling alliance partners backed the actor for his work.
