As the internal rift between the Congress party on national level fumes, Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam has alleged that the letter written by 23 senior party leaders is a conspiracy to undermine the leadership of Rahul Gandhi.

“The conspiracy which was hatched in closed rooms has emerged in form of a letter,” Nirupam added while urging Rahul Gandhi of saving the Congress and quit the stubbornness of not taking up the President post.

“The only answer to this, Rahul ji should quit stubbornness of not being president and save the collapsing walls of Congress in the states. Only he can save Congress,” he asserted.

Earlier, 23 senior Congress leaders including Ghulam Nabi Azad, Kapil Sibal, Prithiviraj Chavan and Milind Deora wrote a letter to Sonia Gandhi asking for active leadership and reforms in the party on the national level.

The letter was leaked in the media hours ahead of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting on Monday. The letter has caused fireworks in Congress and has created factions. In the meeting, the CWC decided that Sonia Gandhi will remain the interim president until a new chief is elected.

Reacting to this, Nirupam questioned those demanding the resignation of Sonia Gandhi and said that CWC members should also take accountability like Rahul Gandhi for Congress’ defeat in the Lok Sabha elections last year.

“Rahul Gandhi resigned taking account of the loss in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Isn’t the CWC accountable? Why have the members not resigned so far? (sic)," Nirupam said.

On Monday, the CWC meeting lasted for more than seven hours and it was decided that Sonia Gandhi will remain the interim president until a new chief is elected.
