After the commuters from non-essential sectors demanded that they should also be allowed to use the Mumbai local train services, Maharashtra Public Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Wednesday said that the demands of general passengers are valid but the final decision on the issue remains with Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

While speaking to the reporters in Mumbai, Tope said that the demand made by ordinary passengers to use the local train service is right but it is impossible to practice social distancing onboard.

“The demand made by commuters is valid but it can be a risky and dangerous move (to allow general passengers to travel in local trains) in wake of the coronavirus pandemic. However, the final decision lies with the Chief Minister,” he said.

On Wednesday, hundreds of commuters agitated at Nalasopara ST (state transport bus) stand and got down onto the train tracks at the railway station while demanding that they should be allowed to travel in the local trains.

This happened after there the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRT) buses didn’t arrive at the bus stop. Every day, nearly 100 to 150 buses leave Nalasopara ST bus stand for people working in non-essential sectors.

However, it was told to the commuters that no buses will ply from today which resulted in the agitation. Due to the protest, the local train scheduled was disrupted and needless to say, the social distancing norms were violated.

Meanwhile, Tope further informed that the Maharashtra government was planning to reopen gyms and shopping malls under the ‘Mission Begin Again’. He said that the final decision regarding the same will be announced soon.
