Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar has said that the patients who are critical and require emergency treatment for COVID-19 will be provided beds in the hospitals. The Shiv Sena leader also admitted that there are some issues regarding the availability of beds.

This came after the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claimed that the situation in Mumbai is getting serious as the healthcare system of the financial capital has collapsed.

Pednekar, however, slammed the opposition and said that the issue of bed availability remains but the situation was not like what the opposition has claimed. The Mumbai Mayor informed that the administration has taken over the private hospitals to ensure that there is no shortage of beds.

“Everyone who tests positive for COVID-19 thinks that they require beds. But this doesn’t work like that. The patients who are critical and have an emergency should get the bed,” Pednekar said while talking to the reporters.

The Shiv Sena leader further stated that the hospitals are under pressure after the coronavirus outbreak and there are other patients too who need treatment for ailments other than COVID-19.

“We need to understand that our hospitals were under pressure and after the coronavirus outbreak, the same has increased. The patients with other ailments also require treatment,” she said.

As of June 7, the number of coronavirus cases in Maharashtra has increased to 85,975 while the death toll in the state has touched 3,060. In Mumbai alone, the number of COVID-19 cases has risen to 48,774 and the death toll has reached 1,575. On Saturday, nearly 1,274 fresh cases were reported in the last 24 hours in the financial capital.
