Both Shiv Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are at loggerheads over Nanar Refinery project. The heat between the parties was witnessed at a press conference where SS president Uddhav Thackeray openly challenged BJP to take the project to Gujarat. He added that BJP is threatening to shift the project to Gujarat and they should do that. "Why you didn't think of Vidarbha and chose Konkan," questioned Thackeray.

Meanwhile, state industries minister and Sena leader Subhash Desai announced that the notification for land acquisitions for the proposed Nanar Refinery project has been cancelled in the presence of Uddhav Thackeray. However, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis dismissed the statement adding that Desai has expressed its own opinion and it is not government's decision.

He further said that the decision of the same rests with the high-power committee which comes under the state's chief secretary and not with the minister. 


What is the Nanar Refinery project?

It is a joint venture between a consortium of three Indian oil companies — IOC, BPCL and HPCL — and oil giants Saudi Aramco. On April 13, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Aramco and the Indian consortium. It is believed that this project will generate one lakh jobs and rope in an investment of up to ₹1 lakh crore.
