Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray has announced the constitution of a cabinet sub-committee to look into the demands of the OBC (Other Backward Classes) community. Multiple leaders from the OBC community held a meeting recently with state cabinet ministers after the Supreme Court stayed the state’s Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) Act. Maratha communities across the state protested the top court’s decision.

Speaking on the creation of the cabinet sub-committee, Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, Chhagan Bhujbal said that the committee was primarily created to expedite the benefits provided to the OBC community. Bhujbal is also a member of the newly formed committee.

“There are a lot of pending issues concerning the community. The sub-committee will decide on various issues to give justice to the community,” Bhujbal said. The sub-committee also includes leaders like Vijay Wadettiwar, Jitendra Awhad, Dhananjay Munde, Sanjay Rathod, and Gulabrao Patil.

The OBC community is reportedly concerned that if Marathas are included in the OBC category, their existing quotas will be reduced. However, the state government has previously assured the OBC community that their quotas will not be affected. The OBC community is currently eligible for 27% reservation in education and government jobs.

Prominent OBC leader, Prakash Shendge has asked the Sena-Congress-NCP led coalition government to provide more daylight on their willingness to provide benefits to the OBC community.

“The Maratha community is being favoured while we are saddled with sub-committees. If the government does not want to give us benefits, then they should clarify,” Shendge said.
