Amid rising coronavirus cases across Maharashtra, especially in Mumbai, and fear of the anticipated fourth wave, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has called a meeting with COVID-19 task force today, June 2.
The meeting comes as Maharashtra has been reporting a spike in the daily case load for the last few days. Additionally, experts have warned of a possible fourth wave in June-July.
According to the latest reports, daily infections and the test positivity rate (TPR) increased in Mumbai on Wednesday, June 1 with the city reporting 739 cases. This is reported to be the highest single-day rise in cases in 116 days. Moreover, the positivity rate was at 8.4 per cent which is the highest since February.

Based on accounts, data furnished by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) the TPR in Mumbai rose from 6 per cent on Tuesday, May 31 to 8.4 per cent on Wednesday. A week ago, the positivity rate was nearly 3 per cent. Likewise, till Wednesday, in the 24 hours, 8,792 COVID-19 tests were conducted in the city.
Meanwhile, owing to the rise in cases registered in Mumbai, Maharashtra too witnessed a jump in figures. The state's tally crossed the 1,000 mark with 1,081 cases being reported. Nonetheless, zero COVID-19 deaths were registered. Maharashtra now has a positivity rate of 4.25 per cent.
On the other hand, Nandurbar, Dhule, Latur, Parbhani, Akola, Buldhana and Gondia have zero active cases.
Besides, BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal on Wednesday asked the authorities to ramp up testing and vaccination. He also anticipates a rise in symptomatic cases owing to the approaching monsoon season.
Amid rising coronavirus cases over last few days across Maharashtra, the Mumbai guardian minister Aslam Shaikh hinted of restrictions again if daily COVID-19 positive cases exceed thousand in the state.
